Osteopathy

Osteopathy is a way of detecting, treating and preventing health problems by moving, stretching and massaging a person’s muscles and joints.

What is Osteopathy

“It is based on the principle that the structure and functions of the body are closely integrated, and that a person’s well-being requires the neurological, musculoskeletal, circulatory and visceral structures to work in balance together. Osteopathic practice aims to restore (and maintain) a person’s body to its overall natural state of well-being. This homeostasis is seen as promoting the body’s ability to heal and regulate itself….” – According to Osteopathic International Alliance

How do they treat?

Osteopathic practitioners thus assess and treat the ‘whole person’, rather than just focusing on specific symptoms or illnesses. Patients presenting with a particular condition are given an overall structural and functional assessment in line with the osteopathic view that the primary cause of the disorder may be remote from the symptoms. This perception of the body as an integrated whole means that osteopathic healthcare is often described as ‘person-centered’ rather than ‘disease-centered’ in its approach to the prevention, treatment of illness and injury. To an osteopathic practitioner, for a person to maintain optimal health, their neurological, musculoskeletal, circulatory and visceral structures must all be functioning well.

What to expect during treatment?

The first visit is an hour and includes health history, physical assessment, and initial treatment. Wear anything that is comfortable and does not limit your range of motion. Some people feel significant relief after one or two visits, more thorough treatment may require 3-10 visits. Many people come a few times per year for regular checkups. Osteopathy is gentle, non-invasive and very relaxing.

You do not need a doctor’s referral for Osteopathy!

Osteopathy focuses on person-centered approach vs symptoms approach. This process may take some time, but the results are often more permanent with less chance of the disorder returning.

Although each clinic’s approach to intake, assessment, and therapy do vary, generally speaking, your Osteopathy will ask a series of questions that will help better describe all of your symptoms in detail. Our therapist will examine you physically and discuss the findings, the cause of the problem, and suggest a solution that can effectively treat your health problem

Yes, infants and children, like adults, experience mechanical dysfunctions which lead to pain and behavioral changes. Often correction of these dysfunctions results in improved mood, digestion, and focus.
