Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS) Therapy

Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS) Therapy is a specialized and effective physiotherapy treatment designed to alleviate chronic pain and muscle tightness. This therapy targets specific muscles or trigger points using fine, sterile acupuncture needles to stimulate a healing response within the affected muscles, release tension, and enhance nerve function. IMS aims to restore optimal muscle performance and is particularly beneficial for those struggling with persistent pain or muscle stiffness that hasn’t responded to other treatments.

Origin of IMS Therapy:

  • Dr. Chan Gunn, who developed IMS, made this groundbreaking discovery while working for the BC Worker’s Compensation Board in the 1970s.

  • Many of Dr. Gunn’s patients suffered from chronic pain without major injuries, leading him to identify neuropathic pain as the culprit, caused by overstimulated nerves.

  • He used acupuncture needles to stimulate affected muscles and termed it Intramuscular Stimulation.

  • Dr. Gunn conducted extensive research and developed a training curriculum for medical professionals. Today, this program is taught at the University of British Columbia’s School of Medicine.

Benefits of IMS Therapy:

  • IMS therapy is primarily used to treat musculoskeletal pain and neuropathic pain, particularly in a chronic state (> 6 weeks).

  • Conditions that can benefit from IMS therapy include lower back pain, tennis elbow, carpal tunnel, chronic whiplash, sciatica, fibromyalgia, and many others.

  • IMS therapy is not suitable for chronic inflammatory pain or pain resulting from conditions like cancer, arthritis, diabetes, or Parkinson’s disease. It’s also not recommended for pregnant women, individuals recovering from surgeries, or infections.

Pain Sensation and Discomfort:

  • IMS may be more uncomfortable for those who have undergone acupuncture before, as needles are directly inserted into painful muscles to stimulate them.

  • The discomfort is due to the intention of triggering a reaction in the nervous system to reset its response.

  • Experienced physiotherapapists conduct a thorough assessment before IMS treatment to ensure effectiveness and relative comfort.

Side Effects of IMS:

  • Normal post-treatment effects may include soreness and achiness in the treated area for the first 24-48 hours.

  • Increased blood flow and muscle twitch response during treatment can temporarily weaken the areas.

  • Common side effects include bruising and local tenderness at the treatment site.

Recovery and Relief:

  • To alleviate soreness, patients are advised to stay hydrated and apply heat to the affected areas to promote healing.

  • Vigorous exercise and stress on the body should be avoided during the initial recovery period.

  • Following this period, soreness should subside, and normal functionality will resume.

Consulting on IMS Therapy:

  • If you believe you could benefit from IMS therapy, consulting with a physiotherapist is a wise decision. They can assess your specific needs and help you return to your normal activities pain-free.

IMS therapy is a valuable tool in addressing chronic musculoskeletal pain and neuropathic conditions, offering relief and improved quality of life for many patients.
